A useful PhotoCraft alternative depends on what you are trying to finish. Retouching a photograph, painting an illustration, editing a PSD in a browser and continuing an Adobe-based team project are different requirements. This guide groups candidates by those tasks rather than declaring one universal winner.
The descriptions below are based on official product pages checked on October 12, 2026. Recommendations are our interpretation of those documented roles, not the result of a comparative speed test.
Compare the starting points
| Application | Consider it for | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|
| GIMP | Open-source desktop image manipulation | Your required filters, extensions and document exchange |
| Krita | Digital painting and illustration | Tablet behavior, brushes and output requirements |
| Photopea | Browser-based image and PSD editing | Your representative document in the browser you use |
| Photoshop | An established Adobe-dependent workflow | Current plan, system requirements and required plugins |
GIMP for open-source image manipulation
GIMP describes itself as a free, open-source image editor for GNU/Linux, macOS and Windows, with retouching, compositing and extensibility. It is a relevant candidate when you want a desktop image-editing workflow and public source access.
Try the exact operations you need rather than assuming a familiar feature name behaves identically. If you use plugins or scripts, check their support for the version you install. Retain a native working document and test the format that another person will receive.
Choose this evaluation route when editing and manipulation are central. If brush-driven illustration is your main work, compare the painting-focused option below as well.
Krita for painting and illustration
Krita presents itself as a free, open-source painting application. Its official feature summary highlights brush types, layers, drawing assistants, stabilizers and animation tools.
That focus makes Krita worth evaluating when the important question is how drawing feels with your tablet and brush settings. Test pressure, canvas navigation and the brushes you rely on. For an illustration project, the quality of that working experience may matter more than similarity to another photo editor's menus.
Do not treat a painting recommendation as a promise about every photo-retouching or PSD-delivery requirement. Check the intended export and the recipient's application before making it part of a shared workflow.
Photopea for editing in a browser
Photopea offers browser-based editing and documents opening and saving PSD files. Its product page also lists layers, masks, adjustments and other editing tools.
Consider it when installing a desktop application is inconvenient. Open a representative document in the browser you actually use, complete a small revision and save the result locally. Confirm that your saved file can be reopened before closing the editing session.
Browser access and open-source licensing are separate questions. We do not classify Photopea as open source simply because the editor is available online. Check its own service information for terms relevant to your work.
Photoshop for Adobe-dependent work
Photoshop remains a candidate when the required workflow names a specific Adobe feature, plugin or collaborative process. Check the current subscription and technical requirements directly with Adobe.
Before switching away from a required tool, list the dependency precisely. “Needs Photoshop” may mean a layered file exchange, a particular automated action, or a feature with no approved substitute in your team. Those cases need different tests. Our PhotoCraft vs Photoshop comparison provides a migration checklist.
Use one sample to decide
Create a copy of a real project and define success before testing: the required edit, final format and acceptable appearance. Complete the same small task in each shortlisted application. Record missing steps, workarounds and problems reopening the result.
For Linux, check that the release you choose supports your system. The PhotoCraft Linux guide is useful if your original difficulty was package selection rather than the editor itself.
If your task is managing a raw-photo library, examine LightCraft. For vector artwork, examine VectorCraft. Those tools address different jobs and should not be judged as interchangeable layer-based photo editors.
When to keep PhotoCraft in the shortlist
If PhotoCraft already completes your task and its saved files pass your checks, an alternative may not improve the workflow. The app guide helps with an initial exercise, and the download page links to official builds.
Compare against your requirements, retain the original files and revisit only the decisions affected by a new release. A task-specific choice is more durable than a ranking based on launch attention.
